(ABILENE, Texas)–Throughout the academic year, Hardin-Simmons University is home to a variety of athletic events, including a plethora of games through the school’s Intramurals Program. The program offers leagues for more popular sports, including flag football, volleyball, and basketball, and it also provides annual tournaments in sports like spike ball and tennis, that students are invited to participate in each year.

According to the HSU website, “Intramural Sports are intended primarily to afford an opportunity for experiential learning through athletic participation for the entire HSU Community.  We serve to cultivate lifetime recreational skills, to integrate students socially in a sports setting, and to foster a spirit of sportsmanship and fair play among participants and spectators.”

Intramurals offer the chance to participate in athletics to students of all skill and ability levels. The program fosters a sense of teamwork, accomplishment, and friendly competition amongst HSU students, and allows participants to get active in a fun, upbeat environment. Since the program welcomes players at all skill levels, intramurals are beneficial both to students who have little experience in athletics and would like the chance to learn and to students who played sports in high school and chose not to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Major sports leagues include flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and softball.

“Where students benefit from intramurals is community engagement. We want the people who aren’t sure what they want to do… We want the people who are looking to find their thing,” said HSU’s Coordinator for University Recreation, Donavon Hailey. “The most important part is coming in and engaging with us.”

Jordan Craig, senior at HSU and intramurals sports chair for women’s social club Epsilon Pi Alpha explained, “intramurals are fun because you get to enjoy playing the sport you love with your friends. You don’t have to be good because everyone is so encouraging and wants you to succeed, so there is no pressure to be good. It’s all about having fun and bonding with your teammates.”

The intramural sports program operates with its motto constantly in mind: where character meets competition. Through intramural sports, HSU students gain access to a new community and way of connecting to those around them.
